Geographically, Indonesia has thousands of islands. Thus, it is called archipelago country. That makes Indonesia has cultural heritage in each island and province. From western part, Indonesia has Sumatra Island. Sumatra itself is divided into North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and South Sumatra. North Sumatra is best known as province with Batak tribe as the majority. The Bataknese or Batak people are not only living in North Sumatra but they are widespread all over the Indonesia. Compared to other cultures in Indonesia, Batak tribe has popular traditional dance called Tor Tor. The Tor-tor dance truly came from Batak tribe. This kind of traditional dance combines traditional musical instruments and movements.
The music played when dancing Tor Tor is called Magondangi. In addition, some traditional musical instruments are used such as flute, Gondang, etc. Tor-tor is just a combination of the rhythm of music played from musical instruments with traditional movements. If talking about the history of Tor Tor. This dance is originally a ritual associated with spirits. Traditionally, the ritual is done to call or invoke the spirits to go to stone statue that symbolizes Batak people’s ancestors. This dance involves the movement of foot and hands. There are actually three kinds of Tor Tor such as Tor Tor Pangurason, the dance that aims to purify environment from evil spirits and bad luck. Tor-Tor Sipitu Grail is kind of exclusive dance addressed to King’s ceremonial. Tor-Tor Panaluan is another kind of Tor-Tor, which is usually dance after disasters happen. It is also to cleanse evil spirits.
The Tor-Tor Sipitu grail also has old history. This traditional dance is derived from the story of seven daughters coming from heaven and they bathe in a lake. While Single Panaluan is danced by the Shaman and it also aims to give solution on the problems that happen. This dance also involves supernatural power. In this modern era, the purpose of dancing Tor-Tor has changed. It used to be done to invoke spirits or ancestors or ask solutions. When there is a big ceremony, there will be Tor-Tor. But now, Tor-tor dance is mainly done to welcome tourists.
Talking about the history of many traditional dances in Indonesia is very interesting. Tor-tor for example is one of traditional Batak dance which is still popular. The most interesting thing from Tor-Tor is that you will see Sigale-gale, a human-like puppet that is always present at Tor-Tor. The puppet will move its hands up and down and those movements will be followed by female Tor-Tor dancer
